A GP view of Workflow

This is so exciting; it can make such a difference to your day-to-day. I think it’s really rewarding to talk to practices that don’t have anything yet, because they have so much to gain from Workflow.”

- Dr Fiona Bellringer, GP and Workflow GP Lead

Part of Practice Unbound’s ethos is to ensure we deliver a robust programme that meets the expectations and needs of those working in Primary Care.

We have taken the time to listen and talk to our customers to gain their feedback.

In this short video we speak to GPs and find out about their experiences of Workflow. They also describe the benefits that Workflow has brought their Practices and why they wanted to get involved.

Dr Cathy Bryant, GP and Workflow GP Lead:

“Workflow is a process whereby incoming correspondence is read, read coded, and then actioned by a trained non-clinician. It’s absolutely essential that the GP Workflow Lead works closely with the Workflow Administration Team.

“That’s needed to help build their confidence in the work they are doing, to support them in the work that they’re doing and to reassure the rest of the practice that the work is being done safely.

“There is an investment needed at the beginning to ensure that this can be done safely and work well. It also reassures the Workflow Administrators themselves, and the rest of the team that this is delegation of work and that it is happening safely.”

Dr Dan Jenkinson, GP and Workflow GP Lead:

“The impact on the administrative workload for GPs has been fantastic to see. We used to see a lot of stuff that was irrelevant for our day-to-day work and now we’re just getting the detailed information we need to look after those patients more safely.

“The benefits of Workflow, beyond time saving are that the processes are done better. The Administrators, because they are reading the coding, are actually able to pick up more than the GPs do.

“The skills you need to be a good GP Workflow Lead include having a good eye for detail and be a good communicator.”

Dr Fiona Bellringer, GP and Workflow GP Lead:

“Practice Unbound’s Workflow has been reviewed by medical defense organisations, ensuring that we are doing a safe delegation of responsibility to a trained staff member to be able to process these letters.

“With the audit process we are regularly reviewing and ensuring that we are happy as GPs to sign off these letters that are being reviewed by the Administrator.

“Up skilling the Workflow Administrators has been a really fulfilling. We have developed a really supportive environment where we’re able to give feedback, and it has really helped to develop a relationship within the team and within the practice.

“At the end of every month we are given data by the Primary Unbound (Here) team. It is really useful to see that data and see where the workload is coming from.

“When letters are created via the template, we are able to see what action is required from every letter, how many medications need to be amended by the GP, and how many referrals are needing to be done. It’s really helpful for us as a practice to be able to analyse that data and change our practice moving forward.

“This is so exciting; it can make such a difference to your day-to-day. I think it’s really rewarding to talk to practices that don’t have anything yet, because they have so much to gain from Workflow.”
