Mood and Microbes: The Gut-Brain Connection
The gut is home to 100 trillion microbes that interact with the body's metabolism, influencing hunger signals, immune function, and energy balance. Through the gut-brain axis, these microbes help regulate hormones involved in hunger and fullness, potentially shaping eating behaviour and body weight. With 70% of the body's immune system located in the gut, the gut microbiome is closely linked to immune responses, and disruptions have been associated with chronic low-grade inflammation - an early feature of many metabolic and inflammatory conditions. This talk will explore this emerging science connecting the gut microbiome to hunger and metabolic health, along with evidence-based dietary strategies to support a healthy gut.
Dr Emily Leeming
Dr Emily Leeming PhD MSc RD is a microbiome scientist at King’s College London, registered dietitian, former chef, and author of Genius Gut: The Life-Changing Science of Eating for your Second Brain. Frequently featured in the media, including Vogue, BBC Radio, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and The Telegraph, Dr Emily also writes for The Daily Mail and Women’s Health magazine. She shares science-backed insights on nutrition, the gut microbiome, and the gut-brain connection through her Substack newsletter, Second Brain.
